How to Choose the Right Yoga Teacher Training
So, you’ve fallen in love with yoga — and now you feel the call to go deeper.
Maybe you want to teach, maybe you just want to understand more. Either way, a Yoga Teacher Training (YTT) can be a powerful, life-shifting step.
But with so many options out there, how do you choose the one that’s right for you?
Here’s a conscious, grounded guide to help.
1. Clarify your Why
Are you here to teach? To heal? To understand your body or mind more deeply?
Getting clear on your intention helps everything else fall into place.
2. Timing & Location
Ask yourself:
When can you give yourself at least 3–4 weeks of space?
Would you thrive in nature or in a city setting?
Do you want to travel far or stay close to home?
Nature often supports reset. Cities can challenge your detachment.
3. Budget Mindfully
Costs vary depending on country, format, and accommodation.
Don’t forget: travel, food, visa, and downtime expenses add up.
Look for transparency in what’s included — and plan ahead.
4. Check Your Physical Readiness
Daily asana, early mornings, deep mental work — it’s not a retreat, it’s a full-body commitment.
If you have any health concerns, speak to your doctor and the school in advance. Know your edges.
5. Food & Lifestyle
Most YTTs serve vegetarian meals — some simple, some more varied.
Check dietary accommodations and stay open to the experience. Food is part of the transformation.
6. Social Setting
Big group or small circle?
The energy around you matters. If in doubt, go smaller — more space for stillness, reflection, and inner work.
7. Style of Yoga
Stick to the style that resonates with you — it helps you go deeper, faster.
Hatha and Vinyasa are good foundations if you’re unsure.
8. Who Teaches You Matters
Research the teachers. Look for depth, experience, and authenticity.
Ask yourself: do they walk the talk? Have they lived what they teach?
9. Is the School Certified?
Look for a 200-hour Yoga Alliance (AYA) certified training.
Even if you don’t teach, it’s good to have the recognition and structure.
10. Mental Practices Included?
Pranayama, meditation, journaling — these are essential.
Some schools skip over them. Don’t.
11. After the Training
You don’t need a full plan, but ask:
What do I want to do with this?
Let the answers come in their own time.
